Possession

Cinema Shock Roulette X

Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror film POSSESSION has earned a reputation as one of the most intense and polarizing cult films ever made. With its mix of body horror, relationship drama, and existential breakdowns — all anchored by an utterly unhinged performance from Isabelle Adjani — POSSESSION has been called “extreme but essential viewing” by Time Out and remains a singular experience more than 40 years after its release.

This week, we take a detailed look at Żuławski’s career in his native Poland, how he was forced into exile by the country’s Communist government, and the personal and political circumstances that led to the making of POSSESSION— a film that channels real-life heartbreak into an unforgettable cinematic scream.
