After a promising start to his career with THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, director Tobe Hooper went though a series of ups and downs in his career, a period of time that ultimately culminated in a gig directing POLTERGEIST under producer Steven Spielberg (which we detailed in our series The Tragedy of Tobe Hooper).

While that job should have propelled him to the A-list, the controversy surrounding it — spurred by rumors that Spielberg himself directed much of the film — actually ended up harming Hooper’s career.

So instead of being propelled to the A-list, Hooper found himself working for b-movie moguls Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus and their company Cannon Films.
