Mulholland Drive

David Lynch: Between Two Worlds, Part IV

“It'll be just like in the movies. We'll pretend to be someone else.”

We continue our David Lynch: Between Two Worlds series with a full deep dive into what many consider his magnum opus: MULHOLLAND DRIVE — a mystery that starts as a sun-drenched Hollywood fairy tale and unravels into a nightmarish reflection on identity, desire, and illusion.

Originally conceived as a television pilot for ABC, the project was unceremoniously shelved. But Lynch refused to let it die. With a bit of European funding — and a lot of creative freedom — he reshaped the unused footage into something stranger, darker, and more personal. The result: one of the most celebrated films of the 21st century.

In these episodes, we trace MULHOLLAND DRIVE’s unlikely journey from dead pilot to surreal masterpiece. Along the way, we explore the film’s creation, its dreamlike structure, the careers it launched (especially Naomi Watts), and its commentary on the seductive—and destructive—nature of Hollywood mythmaking. We’ll also examine the additions that gave the film its final, haunting shape, its critical revival after Cannes, and its lasting influence on cinema and culture.

Whether you’re watching it for the first time or the tenth, there’s always something new to discover in David Lynch’s city of dreams.
